Leak Shows Off Rogue, This Year's Last-Gen Assassin's Creed [UPDATE]

The second forthcoming 2014 Assassin’s Creed game, formerly discussed under the codename Assassin’s Creed Comet, appears to be called Assassin’s Creed: Rogue and feature the return of sailing gameplay and a protagonist with possible Templar loyalties, according to a leaked trailer. The pre-rendered trailer and screencaps of it have appeared on numerous community sites this morning, including the unofficial Assassin’s Creed Chile Facebook page and NeoGAF. Video uploads of the trailer to sites such as YouTube have swiftly been blocked. It’s unclear when the game takes place, though the scene from the trailer atop this post suggests the location will include somewhere very cold. (Note that those are unlikely to be in-engine graphics.) We’d previously heard that the game involves sailing in the Atlantic Ocean and that the timeframe is similar to the 18th century adventures featured in the last two big games in the AC series. This is a different game than Assassin’s Creed Unity, the late-October release that Ubisoft has been showcasing since the spring and that is exclusive to the newer PS4 and Xbox One consoles as well as PC. Earlier this year, Kotaku and other outlets had reported that a second AC game was in development for last-gen consoles. Today’s trailer pegs Rogue as an Xbox 360 release, and the unofficial Assassin’s Creed Chile labels the game for PS3 and PC as well. (No mention of Wii U.) Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot did indicate in an interview with Spike’s h25 com เข้าสู่ระบบ Geoff Keighley that there would be something for AC fans who only had last-gen consoles. We reached out to Ubisoft to comment about this game and will let you know what we hear back. The trailer features a character who initially looks like an assassin but wields a sword that bears the cross of the rival Templar order. He also carries a rifle and disembarks from a ship to take aim at what appears to be a prone assassin. Unity has appeared to be a landlocked game set during the French Revolution, a clean break from the evolution of the the sailing-based game systems that debuted in 2012’s Assassin’s Creed III and became the core of the pirate-centric ACIV. Rogue looks to keep that development track going. While the release of two Assassin’s Creed games this fall could be a case of Ubisoft over-milking its most popular franchise and threatening it with Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk-like over-exposure, the series is coming off of the very well-regarded ACIV. The series has also had dual same-season releases before, most recently with ACIII launching alongside the PlayStation Vita’s Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. Earlier this year, just a few months after releasing ACIV, Ubisoft released a PS3/Xbox 360 remake of Liberation in January and then a standalone version of ACIV‘s Freedom Cry expansion several weeks later. AC games are made by many different development teams and the development of the games overlaps, meaning the games may come out annually or more but that each is in development for well over a year.
